  112.       a shareware-related problem with an ASP member by contacting
  113.       the  member  directly,  ASP may be able to  help.   The  ASP
  114.       Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem with  an
  115.       ASP  member,  but  does not provide  technical  support  for
  116.       members' products.  Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545

  135.       SHAREWARE
  136.
  137.       Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try  software
  138.       before  buying it.  If you try a Shareware program and  con-
  139.       tinue  using it, you are expected to  register.   Individual
  140.       programs  differ  on details --  some  request  registration
  141.       while others require it, some specify a maximum trial  peri-
  142.       od.  With  registration, you get anything  from  the  simple
  143.       right  to continue using the software to an updated  program
  144.       with printed manual.
  145.
  146.       Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial  soft-
  147.       ware,  and the copyright holder retains all rights,  with  a
  148.       few specific exceptions as stated below.  Shareware  authors
  149.       are accomplished programmers, just like commercial  authors,
  150.       and the programs are comparable in quality.  (In both cases,
  151.       there are good programs and bad ones!). The main  difference
  152.       is  in the method of distribution.  The author  specifically
  153.       grants the right to copy and distribute the software, either
  154.       to all and sundry or to a specific group.  For example, some
  155.       authors require written permission before a commercial  disk
  156.       vendor may copy their Shareware.
  157.
  158.       Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of  software.
  159.       You  should find software that suits your needs and  pocket-
  160.       book, whether it's commercial or Shareware.   The  Shareware
  161.       system makes fitting your needs easier, because you can  try
  162.       before you buy.  And because the overhead is low, prices are
  163.       low  also.  Shareware has the ultimate money-back  guarantee
  164.       -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.
  165.

  167.       DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT
  168.
  169.       Users  of  QENV  must accept this  disclaimer  of  warranty:
  170.       "QENV  is supplied as is.  The author disclaims all  warran-
  171.       ties,  expressed or implied, including, without  limitation,
  172.       the  warranties  of merchantability and of fitness  for  any
  173.       purpose.   The  author  assumes no  liability  for  damages,
  174.       direct  or consequential, which may result from the  use  of
  175.       QENV."

  178.
  179.       DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT (cont'd)
  180.
  181.       QENV  is a "shareware program" and is provided at no  charge
  182.       to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your
  183.       friends, but please do not give it away altered or a part of
  184.       another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software is
  185.       to  provide personal computer  users with  quality  software
  186.       without  high prices, and yet to provide incentive for  pro-
  187.       grammers  to continue to develop new products.  If you  find
  188.       this  program  useful and find that you are using  QENV  and
  189.       continue  to use QENV after a reasonable trial  period,  you
  190.       must  make a registration payment of $15 to  Annette  Cuomo.
  191.       The  $15 registration fee will license one copy for  use  on
  192.       any one computer at any one time. You must treat this  soft-
  193.       ware just like a book. An example is that this software  may
  194.       be used by any number of people and may be freely moved from
  195.       one  computer  location to another, so long as there  is  no
  196.       possibility  of  it being used at one  location  while  it's
  197.       being used at another.  Just as a book cannot be read by two
  198.       different persons at the same time.
  199.
  200.       Commercial  users  of QENV must register and pay  for  their
  201.       copies of QENV within 30 days of first use or their  license
  202.       is  withdrawn.   Site-license arrangements may  be  made  by
  203.       contacting Annette Cuomo.
  204.
  205.       Anyone  distributing QENV for any kind of renumeration  must
  206.       first contact Annette Cuomo at the address below for author-
  207.       ization.   This authorization will be automatically  granted
  208.       to  distributors recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to  its
  209.       guidelines for shareware distributors, and such distributors
  210.       may begin offering QENV immediately. (However Annette  Cuomo
  211.       must  still be advised so that the distributor can  be  kept
  212.       up-to-date with the latest version of QENV.).
  213.
  214.       You  are encouraged to pass a copy of QENV along to  friends
  215.       for  evaluation.   Please encourage them to  register  their
  216.       copy  if  they find that they can use  it.   All  registered
  217.       users will receive a copy of the latest version of QENV, and
  218.       90  days free technical support. I can be  reached  anytime,

  288.         INSTALLATION
  289.
  290.         QENV   stores  the  database  information in a  file  called
  291.         ENV.DAT  (included  on  the diskette).  When QENV is started
  292.         the  current  directory  will be searched  for   ENV.DAT  if
  293.         ENV.DAT  is  not found in the current directory,  QENV  will
  294.         search  the path specified in  your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.   The
  295.         same  is true for the printer setup file  PRNT.SET  and  the
  296.         correspondence file ENVLTR.DAT.
  297.
  298.         To create a QENV directory and copy QENV into that directory
  299.         follow these steps,
  300.
  301.         1.  Place the enclosed diskette in drive A:
  302.
  303.         2.  c:>MD QENV [ENTER]
  304.
  305.         3.  c:>CD QENV [ENTER]
  306.
  307.         4.  c:>COPY A:*.* [ENTER]
  308.
  309.         If   you   just  want  one copy of the database file  to  be
  310.         accessed on  your  hard  drive,  I suggest  that  you   copy
  311.         the  file ENV.DAT into a directory specified in  your   path
  312.         and  delete it from where you copied the diskette  (in  this
  313.         case the directory QENV).
  314.
  315.         Hints:   I  have the program QENV copied into  my  directory
  316.         \UTIL  which is specified as part  of  my  path  in  my  AU-
  317.         TOEXEC.BAT  file,  I  also  have  the   file   ENV.DAT   and
  318.         PRNT.SET   copied into \UTIL.  This way I can run QENV  from
  319.         any directory  on  my machine  and  access the information I
  320.         have stored in the one  ENV.DAT,  PRNT.SET file.
